Key steps for proper motor installation

1️ Preparation

  • Check nameplate: Confirm voltage, frequency, power, and enclosure type match your application.
  • Inspect motor: Look for shipping damage, check shaft turns freely, and seals are intact.
  • Verify site conditions: The mounting base must be level, rigid, and strong enough to handle weight and torque.
  • Environmental check: Is it clean? Dry? Ventilated? Does the IP rating match the surroundings?

2️ Mounting

  • Align the motor on its base or mounting feet.
  • Ensure base is flat and level — uneven mounting causes misalignment, vibration, and bearing stress.
  • Use shims if needed to level the motor.
  • Bolt motor down securely but don’t overtighten — use lock washers or thread-locking compound to prevent loosening.

3️ Alignment

  • For direct-coupled loads (e.g., pumps, compressors):
    • Align the shafts precisely in both angular and parallel planes.
    • Use a dial indicator or laser alignment tool — don’t rely on eyesight alone.
  • Misalignment = vibration, heat, bearing/bushing damage.

4️ Coupling

  • Fit the coupling according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Leave correct end float and clearance.
  • For belt drives: Align pulleys, set correct belt tension — too tight damages bearings; too loose causes slip.

5️ Electrical connections

  • Use correct cable size for the motor’s current and distance.
  • Connect per wiring diagram — especially for dual-voltage motors (e.g., star/delta or series/parallel connections).
  • Use appropriate terminals, lugs, and cable glands to maintain enclosure integrity (IP rating).
  • Bond the motor frame to earth ground properly.

6️ VSD/Soft Starter (if used)

  • Check compatibility with motor type.
  • Use shielded cables if required.
  • Install EMC filters or line reactors if specified.

7️ Cooling & ventilation

  • Make sure air inlets and outlets are clear — no obstructions.
  • For TEFC (totally enclosed fan-cooled) motors, ensure the fan cover is intact.
  • For forced ventilation or external fans, wire them correctly.

8️ Testing before startup

  • Insulation resistance test (megger) — check winding insulation to ground.
  • Rotation check — bump the motor briefly to verify direction.
  • Check all bolts, couplings, guards are secure.
  • Confirm overload protection settings match motor FLC (Full Load Current).

9️ Startup

  • Monitor current draw during first run.
  • Listen for abnormal noise, vibration, or overheating.
  • Verify operating temperature stays within limits.
